What does dividend yield actually tell you?
Dividend yield shows the cash return a stock pays back to shareholders each year, relative to its price. It's useful for comparing income across very different companies, but a high yield isn't automatically good. Always check payout ratio, dividend growth history and earnings cover before buying for income.
Frequently asked questions
How is dividend yield calculated?
Dividend yield = (annual dividend per share ÷ current share price) × 100. A £100 stock paying £4 in dividends has a 4% yield.
What is a good dividend yield?
Most quality dividend stocks yield between 2% and 6%. Yields above 8% can signal financial stress, always check the payout ratio and earnings cover.
