The beginner series
Dividend 101
Understand dividend investing, one small step at a time. Five short lessons, everyday examples, and no assumed knowledge.

First, what is a dividend?
A share is a small ownership stake in a company. A dividend is money the company distributes to its shareholders. Some companies pay regularly; others do not pay at all. An ETF is a fund holding a basket of investments, and it may pass income on to you or reinvest it internally.
Dividends are not guaranteed. Payments can be cut or stopped, and your investments can fall in value. You do not need to choose stocks before learning how the numbers work.
