Foreign dividend withholding tax

Learn why the payment that reaches you can be smaller than the dividend announced.

Investing Dividend Tracker editorial guide · Checked 29 October 2026

The one thing to remember

Gross is the dividend before deductions; net is what remains after deductions.

Tax deducted before you receive the money

Withholding tax is tax a country deducts at the source of a payment. With overseas shares, part of the dividend may be withheld before your broker credits your account.

The rate depends on the country, investment, account structure, your tax residency and any treaty relief. It is not simply based on where you are physically located today.

Why people mention W-8BEN for US shares

A qualifying UK-resident individual receiving ordinary US portfolio dividends may be entitled to a treaty rate of 15%, subject to conditions. Documentation such as Form W-8BEN is commonly needed to claim treaty treatment.

Do not assume every US investment, fund or account gets the same treatment. Confirm the applicable rate and paperwork with your broker. An ISA does not automatically eliminate US withholding. Pension accounts and certain investments can have different rules.

Foreign tax and UK tax are separate

Foreign withholding and your UK dividend tax calculation are not the same deduction. Foreign Tax Credit Relief may be available in qualifying circumstances, but limits and conditions apply.

Reclaims can involve paperwork, deadlines and fees. Check official guidance or a qualified adviser instead of assuming all foreign tax can be recovered.

How to make the numbers easier to understand

Keep the original per-share dividend and currency, then record the gross amount, withheld tax and net received. Compare your records with the broker statement.

Use defaults only where they genuinely apply, and override unusual payments. A forecast should remain labelled as an estimate until the amount and dates are confirmed.

  • Check the investment and country-specific treatment.
  • Confirm any treaty paperwork with your broker.
  • Do not confuse tax with conversion charges.
  • Keep gross and net amounts so the difference is visible.
